It’s official, on Wednesday, May 31, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) published Order 6526, approving the Market Dominant rate increase requested by the US Postal Service (USPS). The new rates go into effect on Sunday, July 9, 2023.
The USPS announced that they will be contracting with Verizon for the infrastructure to support their customer interactions. The 10-year, $145 million contract will continue the migration of USPS data services to a cloud-based platform.
A good sign for customers of UPS, as the company reaches a tentative agreement with the Teamsters on a critical aspect of the contract. The SurePost division of UPS utilizes the USPS for the final delivery of small packages. Under the proposed agreement, UPS will reduce the size of the packages eligible for SurePost. This would redirect packages away from the USPS and into the standard UPS delivery system.
In other positive union news, FedEx has reached a tentative agreement with their pilots’ union, the Air Line Pilots Association. This was an important step for FedEx, as the union had passed a strike authorization vote two weeks ago.
