“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” – Edith Wharton
The shining light of a full moon is a beautiful sight. The blackness of the night sky is no match for its luminescence. The dark shadows on the ground give way to the beacon from above. Poets and lovers are inspired by its beauty. Although it doesn’t generate heat, there’s something warm about the shining moon.
There’s no heat, because the moon doesn’t generate light by itself. The moon reflects the light of the sun, over 93 million miles away. Yet we can use the moon’s light to navigate our way through the darkness. And be inspired.
Like the moon, we all have the capacity to reflect light – physical and metaphorical. But we can only reflect to what we are exposed. If we want to shine, then we must find sources of light. We need to seek out illumination and positivity.
In the age of information, there are so many possibilities – millions of books, websites and blogs. You can subscribe to “quote of the day” services, and have small doses of inspiration delivered to your inbox. You can join online communities of people with positive approaches to business and life. But you must choose your sources wisely.
The knowledge we need isn’t always bright and beautiful. The truth isn’t always easy to hear, and facts aren’t always pleasant to read. We must be aware of the realities of the world and the dangers around us. We have to face the darkness.
And just as the moon rotates on its axis, we can turn back to the light. We can absorb the warmth and reflect the goodness. We can be the “mirrors” that Edith Wharton describes.
And in doing so, become the light and inspiration for others.
